With the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Blizzard have introduced a new hero character class: The Death Knight.

WoW Death Knights are horseback-mounted necromantic characters with some seriously powerful abilities. You will need to have the WoW: Wrath of the Lich King expansion installed on your computer to create a Death Knight and you will also require at least one character of any other class at a minimum of Level 55 on any realm.

As soon as one of your characters reaches the requisite Level 55, you are able to create a brand new character in the Death Knight class, which incidentally begins at Level 55. That’s a nice touch as it means you don’t have to level such a powerful character up from Level 1.

From the moment you create your new WoW Death Knight, it’s already equipped with plenty of powerful spells and a complete set of uncommon armor and gear. When you’re through with the WoW Death Knight starting area at Ebon Hold, you’re given a full set of rare gear that is designed to offer greater protection for use in Outland.

Unlike other characters and classes, the Death Knights cast spells and cause damage by using a rune system. The more runes you use, the more Runic Power you accrue. As your Runic Power levels grow, you’ll be able to increase how effective certain abilities and spells will be.

The Death Knight is a seriously powerful hybrid melee class that is able to inflict massive damage. Clad entirely in black, riding a black horned mount, these characters look as tough as they are. Able to match the damage dealt by a Rogue and also able to tank like a Druid without a shield, a Death Knight can also out-match a Warrior or a Paladin for tanking and damage abilities.

Your Death Knight is able to wear plate armor and can use almost any one-handed or two-handed weapon available in the game. A great advantageous ability Death Knights have is the ability to summon an army of ghouls to attack for a really big damage boost or they can simply raise one ghoul at a time to help out in combat.

Death Knight characters have three main Talents, separated into three talent trees. No matter which tree you focus on adding talent points to, they each have the capacity to enhance and support your choice of tanking or DPS melee combat options. Each talent corresponds to a specific rune which is created by turning used runes into Death Runes, which can then be used as either a Blood, Frost or Unholy rune.

The Blood Talent focuses mainly on increasing melee damage by enhancing spells and weapons but also has an option for boosting your chances of healing more quickly during battle.

The Frost Talent improves many aspects of the critical-strike themes along with offering many improved bonus-damage aspects. There are also some really nice options for increasing the amount of physical damage that can be dealt.

The Unholy Talent is primarily focused on the Death Knight’s ability to cast diseases, but has other options that really boost some of the minions your characters can summon.

The introduction of the hero-class WoW Death Knight and its new rune system also sees a new profession brought into the game. Runeforging allows Death Knights to create enchants that enable them to improve and enhance their own weapons
