Before you can get yourself a pet, you need to acquire the “Tame Beast” skill. Use an appropriate wow hunter guide to go through the “Taming the Beast” quest so you can receive the skill as a reward. You should be able to complete them all once you reach level 10.

Keep in mind that using the “Tame Beast” skill will reduce your armor by 100% making you more susceptible to hits by other enemies and beasts. You need to tame the beast for 20 seconds uninterrupted to avoid a failure. This skill should work as long as the beast has a level slightly lower than yours.
Some beasts can be a pain to tame especially if they have annoying special attacks. Hunters can counter fairly well when they reach level 20 with the “Freezing Trap” skill which should give you enough time to tame the beast without worry. Other allies can aid with the taming process such as mages that can polymorph the beast prior to taming. If you are still having trouble, check its statistics by casting “Beast Lore”.

Once you tame the beast, the beast becomes your pet, but it won’t be so loyal to you unless you start feeding it. Feeding a pet the right food will maintain its happiness causing it to deal more damage. It is best to find beasts that can eat meat, bread, and fish as they are the easiest to find. Again, “Beast Lore” can be used to check what the targeted beast can eat.

Be sure you are satisfied with the pet you have as you can only have one pet at a time. For best effectiveness of your pets, you should spend more talent points on your “Beast Mastery”. Climbing your way to the “Beast Mastery” talent will allow you to train powerful Exotic pets that are worth having.
